[music |Katy Perry - Firework]

Recently, I've been given a hard time for enjoying specific songs. Let me be the first to admit that I do not have an especially refined taste in music. In general, I like a lot of music, and, in many ways, I allow myself to be attracted to songs not solely based on the lyrics or the beat or the music video. I have a fairly open mind, musically speaking.

On the other hand, sometimes it's just those things - the lyrics, the beat, the music video - that attract me most to a specific song. Take, for example, Katy Perry's new hit Firework. [This is one of the songs that I have most recently been ridiculed for liking.]

Go check out the music video.

Yes, the tune and beat are both catchy. [It's Katy Perry - even her stupidest songs are catchy.] But that's not why I'm so attracted to it. The music video itself is pretty good, considering what most modern music videos are like. This one happens to not be hyped up with drugs, sex, or otherwise explicit material. As for the lyrics, they may not be brilliant, but they do speak to me. And, to some extent, I think pretty much every teenager - and maybe even everyone, teenager or not - can relate. There's something fundamentally simple about the feeling that she's singing about, and putting it to a catchy tune and an upbeat video, it turns into a message of hope.

Am I the only one who sees this? Am I totally wrong, and actually this falls into the category of "just another stupid Katy Perry song"?

I gather you're not such a fan of some of her, ahem, earlier work?
